Sunny
D Children’s Theater offers children ages 5 to
18 an opportunity for THEATER! And what an
exciting time this is for us. Acting classes are
scheduled for basic skills; monologue classes for
small groups give kids the confidence to audition
for a part in a play; play writing and commercial
writing develop writing skills and kids learn to
work behind the scenes in our tech classes.
We
try to offer some aspect of theater all year long.
Several of our team members have visited schools
in the area to present our theater program for the
kids. Federal and state funding for the arts have
been drastically cut and we would like to offer
our theater program to every child in this
Southern Appalachia area.
We
need support, scholarship money and a venue
location for some of our productions. It takes a
lot of volunteers to put on a quality summer camp
or production. Parents do not pay for costumes,
props and such…we do; and since we only charge
$5.00 for our productions, we are always looking
for creative ways to fund our projects.
Our
goal is to never turn a child away. Every year, we
give scholarships for children that otherwise
would not be able to attend our summer camp. The
number of kids in our theater program has
increased three-fold in three years and we are
always looking for ways to fund activities and our
scholarship program. We always need help in this
area, and we appreciate volunteer help, whether it
is making costumes for a play, organizing snacks
for summer camp, helping back stage, or with
publicity—there’s always a lot to do at Sunny
D Children’s Theater!
Would
you be interested in volunteering with this great
group of people?
We need talents of many kinds.
You do not have to be artistic to
volunteer.
You just need the desire to help the
children.
