Strike the set

In the theater it’s equal parts controlled chaos, workout, and a weirdly satisfying magic trick to watch.

The Breakdown (aka “strike”)

Walls (called flats) come down, furniture disappears and props get sorted. It’s dusty, loud, and fast. But there’s also this bittersweet feeling—like taking down Christmas decorations. The show is over. That world you built? Gone in a couple of hours.

The Turnaround (aka “load-in/build”)

And then sometimes immediately (sometimes the next day) you start building a completely different world.

It smells like sawdust and paint. There’s music playing. People are laughing, solving problems, making it work with whatever you’ve got.

The Best Part

You watch a bare stage turn into something that makes an audience believe. One night it’s a living room. Two days later it’s a church or a cornfield in Oklahoma.

And somehow… it all holds together. It’s exhausting… your back will complain… and you’ll swear you’re too old for this. And then you’ll show up the next day and do it again anyway.

Thank you to the folks that keep the magic of the stage alive and ever changing!
