CAST OF CHARACTERS
Charlie Baker (M, 20's-50's) A painfully shy English proofreader who believes he is utterly uninteresting and struggles even to carry on a conversation. He arrives emotionally fragile, weighed down by his failing marriage and his own self-doubt. When given the chance to “disappear” behind the guise of a foreigner, Charlie begins to observe the world instead of retreating from it and ultimately discovers courage, wit, and a voice he never knew he had.
Seeking: An actor with strong internal life and excellent listening skills. This role requires physical storytelling, precise reactions, and a clear emotional arc from invisibility to confidence to quiet heroism. Accents - English & 'Foreign'
Froggy LeSueur (M, 50's-60's) A British Army demolitions expert and longtime friend of Betty’s. Froggy is outgoing, inventive, and thrives on spinning stories and bending the truth when it suits him. His quick-thinking lie about Charlie not speaking English sets the entire play in motion. Though playful and mischievous, his actions ultimately come from loyalty and a desire to help his friend.
Seeking: Strong comic actor with energy, charisma, and excellent pacing. Needs a confident dialect and the ability to drive scenes while keeping the character grounded and likable. Accent - A Gruff English
Betty Meeks (F, 40's-60's) Owner of a modest rural Georgia fishing lodge. Betty is warm, talkative, and deeply nurturing, someone who genuinely believes in taking care of people. Beneath her cheerful hospitality is a woman facing loneliness, financial pressure, and the fear of losing the home she has built her life around. She carries both humor and quiet sadness, and her kindness is a powerful force in the play.
Seeking: A grounded, authentic presence with natural comic timing. Must balance folksy charm with emotional truth and possess the strength to stand firm when it matters. Accent - Southern
Catherine Simms (F, 20's - 40's) A strong-willed young woman from a wealthy background, carrying both responsibility and emotional weight. She is engaged to David and caring for her younger sibling Ellard, but finds herself increasingly uncertain about the life she is building. Catherine is intelligent, direct, and not afraid to speak her mind, yet vulnerable beneath that strength as she navigates love, trust, and independence.
Seeking: Emotional honesty and depth. The actor should be able to move quickly between humor, frustration, and vulnerability, and create genuine connection with scene partners. Accent - Southern Belle
Ellard Simms (M or F, 10-20's) Catherine’s younger sibling, often dismissed as slow or incapable. While usually played by an older man, we are seeking a young actor or actress to help reinvent this role. Ellard is earnest, eager to please, and more perceptive than others give them credit for. Through their interactions with Charlie, they begin to grow in confidence and understanding and ultimately reveal intelligence and capability that surprise those around them.
Seeking: A sincere, fully human portrayal. No caricature. The actor or actress must show a clear progression in confidence and comprehension, with strong listening and openness. Accent - Southern
Rev. David Marshall Lee (20's-50's) A personable and seemingly kind young minister engaged to Catherine. At first, David presents as thoughtful, reasonable, and supportive, the kind of man you trust easily. As the story unfolds, cracks begin to show, revealing deeper motivations and moral compromise. His journey is one of gradual revelation rather than sudden change.
Seeking: An actor capable of subtle shifts. Must begin as genuinely likable and allow darker intentions to emerge naturally without tipping the hand too early. Accent - Southern
Owen Musser (20's-50's) A local property inspector with a calm, controlled demeanor and a deeply unsettling presence. Owen uses his position of authority to manipulate and intimidate, presenting himself as polite and reasonable while pursuing a dangerous agenda beneath the surface. He is not loud or explosive. His threat lies in his quiet certainty and willingness to push boundaries.
Seeking: An actor with strong presence and restraint. The performance should be grounded and chilling, avoiding caricature while clearly communicating the character’s underlying menace. Accent - Southern
