The Sound of Music tells the inspiring true story of Maria, a spirited young woman who brings music and joy into the lives of the von Trapp family while serving as their governess in Austria on the eve of World War II. As she grows close to the children—and their father—the family must ultimately make a courageous decision in the face of rising political danger.
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the show premiered on Broadway in 1959, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
